Andrew Sutherland is an illustrator and fine artist who grew up between the UK and Cape Town. He studied Fine Art at The Ruth Prowse School of Art in Woodstock. After graduating in 2004 he became an abstract artist’s assistant and later began working as a full-time painter.
Andrew enjoys working in a variety of mediums from watercolours, ink and fine liners on paper to acrylic, spray-paint and charcoal on canvas. His work often evokes a narrative, with soft dream like undertones. Running themes include exploration and discovery with a strong interest in nature and the great outdoors.
We recently collaborated with this fine artist to create an exclusive print garment for our stores. This garment takes form in the shape of a beautiful printed tunic dress - made from a silk and cotton blend.
What sparked your passion for the arts?
I was lucky to have a very encouraging art teacher in school, and I think she helped develop my interest greatly.
What was the inspiration behind the High Discount dress?
For the dress I wanted to create something colourful and full of life. I looked at some old Japanese paintings and prints which gave me a point to start from.
What themes do you pursue?
The themes in my work change from time to time, but I think it's fair to say I am continuity inspired by themes of discovery and exploration. The great outdoors is where it all happens for me.
Finding inspiration in the mundane: what in your daily life inspires you most?
The process of being creative seems to keep me going. If I'm feeling a bit drained I mix it up and try something new which in turn sparks new ideas and new work. As Maya Angelou once said “You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
You can view the rest of Andrew’s work on his website, and keep in touch on Facebook and Instagram.
