Sweet delicacies: M Pâtisserie

There is nothing more enjoyable than delicious eats served in beautiful spaces. M Pâtisserie is a bespoke food service and café, owned by Martjie Malan, who recently added to our #poetryinbloom media day with beautiful food installations. We spoke to her about her business, treats and love of baking.

How and when did you decide to start your own business?

M Pâtisserie opened its doors in 2013. Situated in the heart of Stellenbosch, surrounded by beautiful oak trees, you will find an oasis of baked goodness. We specialise in the ultimate sweet delicacies! Treat yourself to a fine selection of macarons, madeleines, tartlets and cakes. Attention to detail and personal service adds to the homeliness and enjoyment of each visitor’s dining and shopping experience. The ambiance of the interior, courtyard and classic street cafe style reflects a fresh, calm and relaxed elegance.

Your menu is filled with delicious breakfasts, lunches and of course, desserts and pastries. Any specific meals and treats that you consider your specialities?

Our pies are made with handmade butter puff pastry, we suggest the pulled pork with bbq sauce. We are also proud of our macarons, madeleines and French tartlets.

What was the inspiration behind your #poetryinbloom installations?

The beautiful soft colours of the pottery by Wonki Ware inspired me to keep the food colours toned down and simple. We also wanted to serve tasteful, fresh bites.  The coconut yogurt and blueberry tartlet reflects the simplicity that is found in the new clothing range.

Where does your love of baking come from?

I have loved baking since I was very small, trying all recipes in my mom's collection of baking books. Making a success of some and others not. But many happy hours in the kitchen gave me the experience to bake with great success. The love just kept on growing and I am sure will continue to be part of my life.

Visit M Pâtisserie from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 17:00 and Saturdays between 9:00 and 14:00. The shop is located at 1 Andringa Street, Stellenbosch. You can follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram
